Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of yeasts: a turbidimetric technique independent of inoculum size.
The current development of potent antifungal drugs necessitates reliable methods of in vitro susceptibility testing of clinical isolates. Other laboratories have noted with some antimicrobials that conventional tube dilution visual end points for determining minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) vary markedly with the inoculum. With seven isolates (four species) we compared the conventional m...
متن کاملPreparing inoculum for susceptibility testing of anaerobes.
We studied six methods for preparation of inoculum to use in susceptibility tests of anaerobic bacteria to determine viable counts of 15 different species of anaerobes. We counted viable bacteria for each method-organism combination. Methods studied included those used for the more routine tests (broth microdilution and broth-disk elution) and for the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory ...
متن کاملEffects of inoculum size and incubation time on broth microdilution susceptibility testing of lactic acid bacteria.
Inoculum size and incubation time were varied during broth microdilution testing of the susceptibilities of 35 strains of lactic acid bacteria to six antibiotics. An increase in either parameter resulted in elevated MICs for all species. An inoculum of 3 x 10(5) CFU/ml is recommended to assess the antibiotic susceptibilities of these bacteria by using broth microdilution.
متن کاملAn explanation for the effect of inoculum size on MIC and the growth/no growth interface.
The inoculum effect (IE) is the phenomenon observed where changes in the inoculum size used in an experiment alters the outcome with respect to, for example, the minimum inhibitory concentration of an antimicrobial or the growth/no growth boundary for a given set of environmental conditions. Various hypotheses exist as to the cause of the IE such as population heterogeneity and quorum sensing, ...
متن کاملEffect of inoculum size on in vitro susceptibility testing with lincomycin.
There is disagreement in the literature as to whether lincomycin is primarily a bacteriostatic or a bactericidal agent against gram-positive cocci and also regarding the levels of activity of this agent against susceptible microorganisms. These questions were examined in a study of the effect of inoculum size on the results of tube dilution susceptibility determinations with lincomycin against ...
